George sold their popular Hangar One Vodka line to Proximo Spirits to focus on new projects, including: gin, liqueurs, malt whisky, agricole rum, and Breaking & Entering Whiskies. Jorg Rupf retired as master distiller in 2010. The recipe had been in development for 11 years prior to release, as the ban only applied to the commercial sale of the spirit (not development). Made with a brandy (grape) base, this deep-gold absinthe tinged with mossy olive louches to. George Absinthe Verte, since the lifting of the 1912 ban on making the spirit. This is also why other anise-based spirits like sambuca or arak also turn cloudy. In December 2007, the company released the first commercially available American absinthe, St. Sloooowly drip iced water (to taste) into the glass, optionally over a sugar cube resting on a small slotted spoon. The fogginess is caused by the oils from anise in the absinthe, which are alcohol-soluble but not water-soluble. Today, the absinthe on the market DOES contain wormwood (as this is what makes absinthe absinthe!), but don’t worry, it won’t make you hallucinate.įill a small wine glass with absinthe. Although there were some reported cases linking absinthe to deranged behavior, in reality these were largely related to moonshine “absinthe” made from low quality/impure substances that contained who-knows-what, not real absinthe. Its complexity comes from the use of fine brandy, star anise, mint, wormwood, lemon balm, hyssop. So, they jumped in with the temperance fighters of the day to portray absinthe as a crazy substance that would lead to insanity. Absinthe became extremely popular in the 1800s in France (spread to Europe and the US), and after the Great French Wine Blight during which many vineyards were destroyed by a parasite, the wine industry was slow to recover. However, the amount of thujone from wormwood in absinthe is not nearly high enough to have any such effects. Dense and rich with essential oils, it’s viscous on the palate. It opens with flavors of spicy black licorice, evolving into citrus and grassy notes and a bit of sarsaparilla (the 'root beer' flavor). George Absinthe Verte was developed over many years of experimenting with botanicals and distillation techniques. Wormwood contains a substance called thujone, which *may* have some psychoactive properties (controversial). St George's Absinthe Verte is a heady, herbaceous smack to the senses. So…is absinthe really hallucinogenic? Well let’s see…absinthe starts off as a neutral spirit and is infused with the holy trinity of anise, fennel, and the infamous wormwood. George Absinthe Verte, made by infusing brandy with star anise, wormwood and fennel, then distilling it, and then a second infusion of mint, tarragon, opal basil, lemon balm, hyssop, meadowsweet, and stinging nettles takes place. George Distillery in Alameda CA released the first legal American absinthe, which had been in the works for 11 years! And the monkeyface is beautiful on the inside, or, at least, it is delicious, which to someone like Lombard is sort of the same thing. Lombard says the fish’s face has a “simian quality” to it, due in part to the placement of its eyes, which rather than looking out from the side of its head like a fish’s, stare morosely from the center of its face.īut there is superficial beauty, and there is beauty on the inside. ” In a 2004 article in the San Francisco Chronicle, food writer Peggy Knickerbocker called them “ugly as sin.” The Monterey Bay Aquarium’s website describes the monkeyface as having “a bluntly rounded snout, large fleshy lips, and … a lumpy ridge. The wolf eel that lives off of California’s shores isn’t an eel either: like the monkeyface, it belongs to Perciformes, the largest order of modern bony fishes.īesides being a poser, the monkeyface is also widely known for having a face that could incite a thousand ships to retreat to harbor. This sort of misnomer is pretty common, Catania says. One thing the monkeyface is concealing is that it isn’t a true eel.Īccording to Dave Catania, the senior ichthyology collections manager for the California Academy of Sciences, the monkeyface, though long and slender, does not fall into the true eels order, Anguilliformes. They have named it Monty Sanctuary spokeswoman Mary Jane Schramm says Monty has a “low-key” personality, a “quiet” charisma and a frequent “habit of concealment.” The Gulf of the Farallones Marine Sanctuary Association has a monkeyface on display at its visitor center. In adulthood (they can live up to 18 years) they dine on algae, but occasionally “lower their standards and accept a piece of squid offered to them at the end of a bamboo pole,” Lombard says. The monkeyface may not change location, but it sure can change its diet: as juveniles, monkeyfaces are crustacean-eating carnivores, but they become herbivores once they reach a few inches in length. In fact, the monkeyface is so disinclined toward movement that it evolved accessory breathing organs that serve as lungs so that it can stay put while the tide has gone out, breathing air for up to 35 hours at a time. Monkeyface eels ( Cebidtichthys violaceus) range from Oregon to Baja California, but an individual monkeyface doesn’t wander farther than 15 feet from its preferred rock crevice in the intertidal zone. He monkeyface eel lives its life like it’s keeping a secret. Kirk Lombard prepares to fish the San Francisco shoreline using his poke pole. Lombard acknowledges that the details of his encounter with Cambodian Stan have faded some in the last two decades, which may explain why the tale is slightly different in each media re-telling.īut no matter the details of the encounter, there is always one nugget at the heart of the story: the monkeyface eel. He has posted a 5-minute musical ode to Cambodian Stan on YouTube. His infrequently used blog,, is a collection of fishing tidbits, self-promotion, and unusual musings on the state of the world. He is distractible, and in his unbridled enthusiasm sometimes interrupts his own outlandish anecdotes. He’s an athletic man, whose signature black-framed glasses have appeared on numerous magazine and newspaper covers. Lombard, a former wildlife inspector for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife who now runs a commercial fishing business and leads undeniably strange coastal walking tours, is by nature a dramatic character. He never saw his muse again, but over the next 18 years Lombard would achieve semi-fame as the “Sea Forager,” known to restaurants and the press as the poke-poling hunter of the monkeyface eel. The next day Lombard found a patch of bamboo growing near the San Francisco airport and chopped down a few poles. Shortly afterward Stan pulled out a cabezon – a large-headed sculpin – and that, Lombard says, is the moment he decided to abandon his rod and reel. Stan showed Lombard the metal hook at the end of the bamboo pole where he had skewered his bait, and plunged it into a water-filled cavity at the base of Squack Rock. “This” - he gestured at the 4-foot-long bamboo pole and out to the rocks below his feet - “is called poke poling.” Intrigued, he climbed down from Squack Rock to ask the man who he was and what he was up to. The man slid the stick between the cracks of the rocks, somehow hooking half a dozen fish in a matter of minutes. N an overcast afternoon in the fall of 1996, while casting his line from “Squack Rock,” a not-so-affectionately named craggy outcrop near Pescadero, Kirk Lombard paused to watch a skinny, middle-aged man in a beat-up wetsuit hop around the rocks with a bamboo stick. Thus, the assassins who sought to thwart one dictator inadvertently paved the way for another. No one left, it seemed, could challenge Octavian's absolute power. In September of 31, Octavian's forces routed those of Antony and Cleopatra at the Battle of Actium. Once they had eliminated their shared enemies, of course, Antony and Octavian turned on each other. In 35, allies of Octavian and Antony captured and executed Sextus Pompey, heir to Pompey Magnus-Julius Caesar's political brother-turned-arch-nemesis-whose naval forces had been harrying them. In October of 42, the forces of Octavian and Mark Antony, Caesar's former deputy, triumphed over those of Marcus Junius Brutus and Gaius Cassius, the two men who had led the plot, at Philippi. A meta study about concept mapping concluded that concept mapping is more effective than "reading text passages, attending lectures, and participating in class discussions". This improvement was only robust after a week for those in the diagram group and there was a significant decrease in motivation compared to the subjects' preferred methods of note taking. Farrand, Hussain, and Hennessy (2002) found that spider diagrams (similar to concept maps) had limited, but significant, impact on memory recall in undergraduate students (a 10% increase over baseline for a 600-word text only) as compared to preferred study methods (a 6% increase over baseline). Positive opinions on their effectiveness, however, were much more prominent among students of art and design than in students of computer and information technology, with 62.5% vs 34% (respectively) agreeing that they were able to understand concepts better with mind mapping software. Other studies also report some subjective positive effects on the use of mind maps. In contrast, a modeling graph such as a UML diagram structures elements using a precise standardized iconography to aid the design of systems.Ĭunningham (2005) conducted a user study in which 80% of the students thought "mindmapping helped them understand concepts and ideas in science". Modeling graphs or graphical modeling languages: There is no rigorous right or wrong with mind maps, which rely on the arbitrariness of mnemonic associations to aid people's information organization and memory. However, either can be part of a larger personal knowledge base system. Also, concept maps typically have text labels on the links between nodes. Concept maps: Mind maps differ from concept maps in that mind maps are based on a radial hierarchy ( tree structure) denoting relationships with a central concept, whereas concept maps can be more free-form, based on connections between concepts in more diverse patterns. In this show, and companion book series, Buzan promoted his conception of radial tree, diagramming key words in a colorful, radiant, tree-like structure. īuzan's specific approach, and the introduction of the term "mind map", started with a 1974 BBC TV series he hosted, called Use Your Head. Philosopher Ramon Llull (1235–1315) also used such techniques. Some of the earliest examples of such graphical records were developed by Porphyry of Tyros, a noted thinker of the 3rd century, as he graphically visualized the concept categories of Aristotle. These pictorial methods record knowledge and model systems, and have a long history in learning, brainstorming, memory, visual thinking, and problem solving by educators, engineers, psychologists, and others. Origins Īlthough the term "mind map" was first popularized by British popular psychology author and television personality Tony Buzan, the use of diagrams that visually "map" information using branching and radial maps traces back centuries. Mind maps are considered to be a type of spider diagram. Mind maps can also be drawn by hand, either as "notes" during a lecture, meeting or planning session, for example, or as higher quality pictures when more time is available. Major ideas are connected directly to the central concept, and other ideas branch out from those major ideas. It is often created around a single concept, drawn as an image in the center of a blank page, to which associated representations of ideas such as images, words and parts of words are added.
